The festival “What’s Up Vienna! What’s Up Montreal!“ ,
curated by Steve Bates, Michaela Grill and Christof Kurzmann connected
the two cities with sound, film and video. With performances,
screenings and debut collaborations between Austrian and Canadian, the
festival took place in Montreal in summer 2010 and in Vienna in May
2011.
Kunstradio
presents recent works by one of the featured artists, Douglas Moffat,
who came to Vienna to perform a live version of his Phonograph,
developed in 2009 for Montreal. In a skype interview with Kunstradio in
August 2011, Douglas Moffat described some of his projects as well as
his approach to sound and landscape:
Moffat frequently collaborates with artist, musician and curator Steve Bates.
As
one of their first common projects, Bates and Moffat created the
composition and sound installation “soundFIELD” for a small
forest of poplar in Quebec. Currently they are preparing a complex open
air sound sculpture for Toronto.
Statement on the Phonograph project:
“What
if the city of Vienna could be played as if it were a vinyl record? If
the city could be cut out along the Ringstrasse and placed on a
impossibly large turntable – what sounds would be revealed?
This
recording takes these daydreams a few steps farther. Using a simple,
custom built device, an all-terrrain stylus traces the topographies of
the inner city. A spiralling trajectory winds its way from the quiet
edge of the Donaukanal to the centre pin of the Pestsäule. The
needle of stylus passing over the ground, transforming micro-textures
into sound.
The
stylus recordings were mastered and cut into a fresh blank vinyl record
by local artist Dieb13, used for a performance during the festival
'What's Up Vienna! What's Up Montreal!' at Echoraum in Vienna. For
Kunstradio, field recordings from each location in the city announce
the beginning of each new track on the record as it spins towards the
centre.”
