Peter Courtemanche
Peter Courtemanche is a contemporary sound and installation artist from Vancouver. He is the Director and Curator of the Western Front's Media Arts Program - which supports the production and dissemination of experimental audio and electronic art. He has worked extensively in radio-art and electronic/interactive interventions. His art works often have a literary basis - inspired by narrative texts and the history of specific installation sites. As a curator, collaborator and producer he has worked with many established and emerging artists in the production and installation of video, audio, and computer/electronic based art.
His work in radio began in 1988 with a weekly program entitled "The Absolute Value of Noise" (1988 - 92, on CiTR FM 102, Vancouver). This program featured a wide variety of radio-art and experimental audio - often generated live on the air. This radio show developed into the annual "24 Hours of Radio/ART" program (1992 - 96) - a collaborative event that explored the concept of a "radio-art" station; an event that posed the question: "What would happen if your local FM pop-rock station suddenly decided to go to an all audio-art format?"
More recently, the artist has moved in the direction of installation and computer interactive art. He collaborated with Lori Wiedenhammer on "Divining for Lost Sound" - an outdoor interactive sound installation that premiered at the Saint Norbert Arts and Cultural Centre in Manitoba. This work was featured at Kunst in der Stadt 2 - a public art exhibition/festival in Bregenz Austria - and at Ceperley House in Burnaby, BC.
In the fall of 2000, the artist directed "Industrial Ear" - a sound art festival that took place at the 1922 Burrard Ironworks building in Vancouver. For this festival he collaborated with Ken Gregory, Carol Sawyer and Alvin Erasga Tolentino on a performance piece entitled "The Shadow Machine". In early 2002 he worked with Roberto Paci Dalò on ".. devolve into II .." - a collaborative network streaming piece that was commissioned by ORF Kunstradio. This piece toured to Vienna and the ZKM in Karslruhe Germany as an installation and performance that merged generative audio and animation technology with Internet streaming. As a piece within a piece the artist created "Cadillac Desert" - a conceptual and technological platform for collaborators to question issues of public vs private, virtuality and isolation from physical/green environments.
Currently, the artist is composing new audio works employing recordings of micro-audio, captured in a multi-layered sound isolation box that can be used on stage to feed very quiet live sounds through a loud-speaker system. Works in progress include "Spark Writing" and "Groove: hand-cut" - to be presented at Send + Receive : a festival of sound in Winnipeg, October 2004.
