FSK Hamburg

FSK  (Freies Sender Kombinat) is a free radio station in Hamburg since 1996. Free Radios are not pirate radios - which means, that they are broadcasting on a legal frequency which they have to pay for and which can be taken away, if they constantly infringe upon the fundamental orders and beliefs the state is based upon. Free Radios exist in many german cities. Some get money from official sides - which is certainly nice but also dangerous, because this money-flow can be stopped very easily - another means to control the radio. FSK in Hamburg never got any money except for contributions from its listeners. This is a big advantage now, after a right wing town government took over and started to get rid of any emancipatory project by simply canceling their subsidy.
Like all the free radios in Germany FSK is a local broadcasting station. Many local groups use the radio to spread news and political reflexions. For many of them - especially migrant groups - the radio is the only media, that have access to. On the other hand, FSK does not simply want to represent left politics or what is left over from the left movement. So we believe, that the radio must do more than bringing a constantly diminishing community what it already knows and still wants to hear. This means, that the radio has to ask, why left politics are these days that unimportant, and it has to look for a media usage, that does not mistake the radio for a megaphone.
So FSK developed several forms of interventionist media usage. In the tradition of left radio theory, radio was always regarded as a medium, that is lacking something - a second channel, that makes real communication possible instead of simple distribution. What was always neglected in these reflections is, that radio distribution is already the basis for political intervention - if the abstract constellation of listeners is turned into a association. The radiogroup LIGNA for example invited the listeners of FSK to something called the "radio ballett". They were asked to come into hamburgs main station - a place competely under video control, in which everyone showing deviant behavior is kicked out - and to bring their radio receivers and headphones with them. LIGNA then broadcasted a choreography of forbidden or suspicious gestures, which the listeners where asked to perfom. So the radio brought back massively into this place, what the regime of control constantly expects and fears and prohibits: an uncontrollable situation.
