A Tourist in a Soundscape by Lisl Ponger, a radiowork by Lisl Ponger.
In a two-year "global trip through Vienna", Lisl Ponger, one of the most renowned Austrian experimental filmmakers and photographers, attempted to document the multicultural multiplicity of Vienna by recording images and sounds. Ponger transposed the materials she collected from her Viennese encounters with over 70 different ethnical and religious communities from 23 countries into several different artistic forms, among them a photo-series, a radio-piece, installations and a book including a CD of the radio-piece.
The radio-version of "A Tourist in a Soundscape" is an associative nontage, in which the author tries to reveal "deeper layers of meaning inside the documentary sound-material". The artistic recombination of the material was determined by Lisl Ponger's experiences as an experimental film-maker: her aim was to set off effects which the listeners know from their own dreams.
Lisl Ponger's radio-piece is a flow of acoustic impressions and sound-images, which stimulates the listener's imagination and thus contributes to an understanding of the "other" within and around us.
